Music in Plymouth began in 1972 on a vacant lot in the Minneapolis Industrial Park. Al Hilde, Jr., Plymouth's mayor, formed a citizen commitee, the Plymouth Civic League (PCL) to sponsor the concert of the Minnesota Orchestra in Plymouth in an effort to promote community identity and spirit. Today, Music in Plymouth (MIP) has become an annual summer extravaganza eagerly anticipated by residents of Plymouth and surrounding communities; more than 15,000 people bring their picnic suppers, enjoy the pre-concert activities and then sit back and revel in the starlight concert in the Hilde Performance Center with its accompanying fireworks. The entire evening's events are simulcast on a large screen that has been added to enhance visual accessibility for the crowd.

The Plymouth Civic League accepts tax-deductible cash and material contributions in eight categories. 100% of all contributions go toward the cost of Music in Plymouth.
